Some softness in grain prices after a quick rally on the Israel-Iran war seems to have created some uncertainty for many growers over what to do with grain sales.
As an example, CBOT wheat futures have now lost all the gains made from the short-lived rally caused by the war.
We have now had two significant and short-lived improvements in Australian grain prices broadly in the last 3 months.
The first was caused by an abrupt fall in the Australian dollar due to US President Trump's liberation day announcements, the second was on rallying international grain futures markets due to the US entering the Israel-Iran war.
Both events saw grain buyers scramble to search for grain offered for sale and bid up their prices to match grower offer prices and buy grain.
Both events lasted just a couple of days. The opportunity for growers to achieve their target prices was brief.
Growers that were organised, made decisions on prices they would be happy to sell for, and offered their grain for sale at those prices, participated in capturing those values.
Many growers that preferred to watch buyer bid prices and react to them, missed the opportunities and can make emotionally charged decisions when they do sell.
If growers have a price in mind that they would sell their grain for, offer it for sale at that price on an independent exchange so all buyers can see it and try to buy it!
There's no downside - you're anonymous, grain can only sell at the price you set, it costs nothing to offer grain for sale, and you don't miss any opportunities - plus you can cancel your offer before it trades if needed.
Offering grain for sale doesn't mean you are a seller in today's market or at current bid prices, but it is a proactive step you can take to show all buyers where you are a seller and ensure you don't miss any opportunities.
Growers have the opportunity to help set prices.
Grain regularly trades at prices growers didn't realise existed - because they were proactive and offered grain for sale at the price they were targeting.
Grain sold through the exchange last week averaged $7.05/t above best published bids on the same day and ranged up to $40/t above bids advertised from buyers.

Growers are impacting the price of Australian grain by offering grain for sale and leading bids higher.
The whole intent of CGX is try and get as many buyers as possible to try and buy growers grain, and growers can control this by offering grain for sale.
If you don't offer grain for sale, buyers can't see it, crunch their numbers and try to buy it. Offering your grain for sale creates demand!
That's how you get as many buyers as possible trying to buy your grain, not just for this season, but for future seasons creating a more sustainable industry for growers.
115 different selling businesses were able to achieve their price targets to sell 29 grades of wheat, barley, canola, lentils, lupins, oats and triticale to 33 different buyers last week.
41 buyers bid for grain offered for sale on the exchange last week, and a total of 104 buyers made 4,745 searches for grain.
