120 buyers looking for grain last week

Wheat was the major commodity where price expectations came together between buyers and sellers to trade last week.

23 buyers matched grower offer prices to trade 12 grades of wheat making up 70% of all grain traded through Clear Grain Exchange (CGX) and igrainX last week.

Stock feed wheat was trading $329/t Pt Kembla and Melbourne on a port track equivalent basis. ASW1 was trading $344/t Kembla and $341/t Pt Adelaide while the similar WA grade AWW1 was trading $360/t FIS Kwinana and Esperance. Better quality APW1, H2 and H1 grades traded at better prices across the port zones.

15 buyer businesses purchased 8 grades of barley through CGX and igrainX last week making up 20% of all grain volume traded.

Feed barley traded $320/t Melbourne, $318/t Pt Adelaide, $315/t Kembla port track and $360/t Kwinana port FIS. Malt grades traded $10/t better than feed in the east and flat to feed prices in the west.

WA barley is trading at a premium to the eastern states above the natural price spread implied by freight and fobbing costs. Eastern states growers should consider this when setting their target sell prices, particularly given the higher domestic use for barley in the east. However, barley prices in comparison to current wheat prices would be seeing feeders switch from barley to wheat indicating the WA barley price is being driven by specific export demand

Canola continues to attract interest from the trade with GM and non-GM canola trading across four states at prices growers were targeting with oil bonification payments on top.

GM canola traded up to $15/t above published bids in Geelong, ISCC declared non-GM canola traded up to $22/t above best published bids in Kembla as examples.

Pulses, oats and sorghum grades were also trading.

Buyers remain active in trying to buy all grains from growers across all states. 37 buyers purchased grain through CGX and igrainX a total of 120 buyers made 4,738 searches for grain listed for sale on the exchange.

The amount of grain to be exported from Australia this year and consumed domestically has not yet been bought by buyers from growers.

This means demand for Australian grains remains and growers have a say in the price they sell it for. Last week saw markets take somewhat of a breather.

There are plenty of buyers searching for Australian grain offered for sale.
