Growers impacting the price of grain

Many Australian grain prices stabilised and improved last week as global futures markets strengthened. Note trade values were regularly very different to best published bids.

The improvement was on the back of the realisation global grain stocks are tight and the northern hemisphere harvest, while underway for winter wheat crops, is not in the bin and spring crop harvests including corn are still to come.

Hence a decrease in US crop conditions and some harsh weather in parts of the world producing grain such as Europe saw markets improve.

The other factor is speculators in CBOT wheat are holding a large net short (sold) position and so can buy a lot of contracts if they get nervous which is what happened last week.

The improvement in offshore futures saw some stability in Australian prices and some modest improvement as buyers look to see what growers will do.

Growers have opportunity to impact Australian grain prices. If you have a price in mind you can offer your grain for sale at that price and let all buyers see it and try to buy it.

This helps buyers lift their bids to prices growers are targeting and encourages more buyers into the market to participate in trying to by grain.

Growers are creating demand for their grain! The simple act of offering grain for sale creates so much value for growers and the grains industry.

64 different selling businesses were able to achieve their price targets to sell 25 grades of wheat, barley, canola, lupins, oats and sorghum to 29 different buyers last week.

34 buyers bid for grain offered for sale on the exchange last week, and a total of 95 buyers made 4,264 searches for grain.

There are plenty of buyers for Australian grain, make it easier for them to try and buy your grain.

13 grades of wheat sold to 16 different buyer businesses last week and made up 69% of all grain sold through Clear Grain Exchange (warehoused grain) and igrainX (on-farm grain).

Barley grades made up 27% of all grain sold through the exchange last week with 13 buyers purchasing barley and more searching for barley offering for sale.

Canola, lupins, oats, and sorghum also traded and other grains were attracting buyer interest.

Grain sold through the exchange last week averaged $9.02/t above best published bids on the same day and ranged up to $50/t above bids advertised from buyers.

Don't just sell into published bids or prices on cash boards which can weigh down prices, growers have a say in prices so offer your grain for sale at the price you want to all buyers and impact price!

There's no downside and your grain regularly sells at price you didn't know existed.

Growers are impacting the price of Australian grain by offering grain for sale and leading bids higher.

The whole intent of CGX is try and get as many buyers as possible to try and buy growers grain, and growers can control this by offering grain for sale.

If you don't offer grain for sale, buyers can't see it, crunch their numbers and try to buy it. Offering your grain for sale creates demand!

That's how you get as many buyers as possible trying to buy your grain, not just for this season, but for future seasons creating a more sustainable industry for growers.
