Not much has changed fundamentally over the weekend with trade in limbo ahead of USDA’s, acreage, stocks and crop progress reports tonight. Friday’s trade featured a bit of short covering as the $US weakened.
StatCan said Canadian farmers planted more acres of wheat, oats, soybeans, lentils, dry peas and corn, but fewer acres of canola and barley compared with 2024, in part due to Chinese tariffs on canola. The biggest surprise was a large upwards revision of last year's canola production numbers, indicating canola supplies from the 17.8mt the agency reported in December to 19.18mt. Traders in Canada have been trading a much tighter canola balance sheet.
